Pony.ai Launches Road Testing of Gen-7 Robotaxis in Guangdong, China

The company has begun public road testing of its seventh-generation Robotaxis in China, a move signaling its progress toward mass production and commercialization.

The vehicles, currently undergoing testing in the bustling southern Chinese cities of Guangzhou and Shenzhen, are built on Guangzhou Auto (GAC)’s second-generation Aion V model. They are equipped with Pony.ai’s cutting-edge autonomous driving system, which debuted at the Shanghai Auto Show just over a month ago. Regulatory approval for these road tests represents a significant shift from the lab to real-world traffic conditions for Pony.ai’s seventh-generation Robotaxi, developed in collaboration with GAC.

Unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show in April, Pony.ai’s Gen-7 autonomous driving system boasts three key advancements. It features 100% automotive-grade components, a 70% reduction in the bill of materials (BOM) costs compared to the previous generation, and a platform-based design that allows for rapid adaptation across various vehicle models.

This latest system incorporates six types of mass-production sensors, offering 360-degree, blind-spot-free perception, and integrates Pony.ai’s proprietary sensor cleaning solution to effectively handle adverse weather and challenging scenarios. The system leverages the company’s in-house developed “PonyWorld” model and reinforcement learning, aiming to surpass human safety standards while navigating the complexities of real-world driving environments. The goal is full-scenario, all-weather operation.
