Pony.ai Launches Road Testing of Gen-7 Robotaxis in Guangdong, China

Pony.ai is accelerating its Robotaxi ambitions, beginning public road testing of its seventh-generation autonomous vehicles in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, China. Built on GAC’s Aion V model, the Gen-7 system boasts automotive-grade components, reduced costs, and versatile design. With advanced sensors and the “PonyWorld” model, the company aims for full-scenario operation. Strategic partnerships and over 45 million kilometers of testing position Pony.ai for mass production and a fleet exceeding 1,000 vehicles by the end of 2025.

GUANGZHOU, China, June 6, 2025 – Pony.ai (NASDAQ:PONY), a major player in the autonomous driving arena, is hitting the accelerator on its Robotaxi ambitions. The company has begun public road testing of its seventh-generation Robotaxis in China, a move signaling its progress toward mass production and commercialization.

The vehicles, currently undergoing testing in the bustling southern Chinese cities of Guangzhou and Shenzhen, are built on Guangzhou Auto (GAC)’s second-generation Aion V model. They are equipped with Pony.ai’s cutting-edge autonomous driving system, which debuted at the Shanghai Auto Show just over a month ago. Regulatory approval for these road tests represents a significant shift from the lab to real-world traffic conditions for Pony.ai’s seventh-generation Robotaxi, developed in collaboration with GAC.

Unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show in April, Pony.ai’s Gen-7 autonomous driving system boasts three key advancements. It features 100% automotive-grade components, a 70% reduction in the bill of materials (BOM) costs compared to the previous generation, and a platform-based design that allows for rapid adaptation across various vehicle models.

This latest system incorporates six types of mass-production sensors, offering 360-degree, blind-spot-free perception, and integrates Pony.ai’s proprietary sensor cleaning solution to effectively handle adverse weather and challenging scenarios. The system leverages the company’s in-house developed “PonyWorld” model and reinforcement learning, aiming to surpass human safety standards while navigating the complexities of real-world driving environments. The goal is full-scenario, all-weather operation.

Dr. James Peng, Pony.ai’s CEO and Co-Founder, commented, “The Aion V with 7th-Gen AD system deployed in these road tests represent a significant milestone in our deep collaboration and ecosystem synergy with GAC. Since launching our strategic alliance in 2018, we have continuously deepened our cooperation across L4 autonomous vehicle R&D, product deployment, and strategic investments.”

Pony.ai brings a wealth of experience to the table, having accumulated over 45 million kilometers in global autonomous test mileage. The company has established an operational network spanning over 2,000 square kilometers across four major Chinese cities – Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. These areas present complex driving challenges, including high-speed rail stations, airports, and densely populated urban commercial zones. Furthermore, over the past two years, Pony.ai has validated its technology through more than 500,000 hours of fully driverless operation under various real-world conditions.

With 2025 designated as its “mass production year,” Pony.ai is moving rapidly from technology demonstration to large-scale implementation. The cost efficiencies realized with its Gen-7 system and its readiness for pre-installed production put the company in a position to build a fleet exceeding 1,000 vehicles by the year’s end, thereby unlocking significant economies of scale.

To fuel this widespread adoption, Pony.ai has forged strategic commercial partnerships with global leaders spanning technology, mobility services, and deployment platforms. These include Tencent Cloud, Alipay, Amap, Ruqi Mobility, Shenzhen Xihu Group, global ride-hailing giant Uber, Singapore’s mobility conglomerate ComfortDelGro, and Luxembourg’s Emile Weber.
