CNBC AI News, July 25 – In a gesture of mourning, Yu Minhong announced today on social media that both “Oriental Select Looking at the World” and “Yu Ni Tong Xing,” popular livestreaming channels under the New Oriental umbrella, will suspend broadcasts for one day, July 25th. This decision comes as a mark of respect for the six young lives tragically lost in an accident at Northeastern University.
The tragedy unfolded on July 23rd at approximately 10:20 AM local time when six students from Northeastern University, during a visit to the Unugtu Mountain Copper-Molybdenum Mine Concentrator, owned by China National Gold Group Inner Mongolia Mining Co., Ltd., fell into a flotation tank after a grating platform gave way.
Following an intensive rescue effort, all six students were recovered, but were pronounced dead by medical personnel. One teacher sustained injuries in the incident.
According to CCTV, a reporter visited the mining facility and interviewed the injured teacher, who sustained minor injuries and is currently recovering.
Speaking to CCTV, the flotation workshop director described the contents of the tank: “The slurry is approximately 6 meters deep, with a temperature ranging from 30 to 40 degrees Celsius and a near-neutral PH level.”
He explained that the tour route followed a designated green pathway within the workshop, approximately one meter wide, normally suitable for two people to walk abreast.
On the day of the accident, the tour group comprised 55 students and teachers, accompanied by three staff members responsible for guiding the group. The point of the fall was located roughly four meters away from where the director was providing explanations to the group, clearly deviating from the designated green pathway.
“I was explaining things to the students and teachers in the front, and the students in the back probably wanted to see too, so they may have gone around from behind. We maintained order before entering the area, but we didn’t have specific safety protocols in place on the tour path itself.”
He further added that the steel grating platform undergoes daily inspection. While personnel regularly check and operate equipment in the area where the incident occurred, no specific safety inspection was conducted specifically for the large-scale student visit beforehand, either by the company or the university, highlighting a potential lapse in risk management.
