CNBC AI News, August 14th – Tech giant Tencent is gearing up to launch the initial phase of its sprawling new headquarters campus. Today, Tencent announced that 30% of the Shenzhen-based complex is complete, with a trial operational phase slated to begin this October.
As part of the campus roll-out, Tencent is opening the doors to its 11 “Penguin Apartments,” a residential offering specifically designed for its younger workforce.
These fully furnished apartments provide a turnkey living solution for employees, complete with modern appliances. Residents will also have access to a range of communal spaces, including shared lounges, fitness centers, learning hubs, hobby rooms, and communal kitchens, all aimed at fostering a comfortable and collaborative living environment.
Tencent has stated that priority for the “Penguin Apartments” will be given to employees working on-site who don’t currently own property.
The modular design of the 11 apartment buildings, arranged to resemble a series of mountain formations, reflects the company’s tech-driven ethos. Each building cluster features a central green courtyard, creating a tranquil urban oasis.
The tiered, terraced architecture allows residents direct access to outdoor spaces and panoramic views, capturing the scenic beauty of the sea to the west and the bay to the east. It’s a perk that highlights Tencent’s investment in employee well-being and work-life integration.
Each apartment is equipped with modern essentials: central air conditioning, electric water heaters, washer-dryer combos, refrigerators, wardrobes, beds (complete with mattresses), sofas, and desks with chairs.
Beyond the individual apartments, the common areas provide a wider array of conveniences and amenities, including well-equipped gyms, study rooms for focused work, shared kitchens for communal cooking, landscaped courtyards for relaxation, and on-site commercial facilities for daily needs. These resources are designed to cultivate a thriving and convenient community.
Located on the east side of the Dachan Bay Wharf in Shenzhen, the Tencent headquarters campus spans a massive 809,000 square meters. Construction began in 2021.
The campus is divided into five distinct districts stretching from south to north, integrating research and development, office space, residential areas, and cultural facilities. Once fully operational, it is projected to accommodate over 80,000 employees, signaling a significant investment in Tencent’s continued growth and innovation.
