CNBC AI News – August 14th – AMD CEO Lisa Su recently sat down for an exclusive interview, touching on everything from export controls and competing with Nvidia, to the transformative potential of AI and the ongoing talent war in Silicon Valley. Of course, there were also a few lighter moments sparking interest.
When asked what annoys her the most, Su quipped, “Well… I can’t say it’s being asked about my relationship with Jensen Huang.”
She followed up, clarifying it’s not so much annoyance as a feeling of, “Really? Is that truly the most important thing we can be discussing?” The remark offers a candid peek into the intense scrutiny facing tech titans leading companies in the AI race.
The connection between Huang and Su is more than just professional. According to work by financial journalist and family heritage expert Wu Jiajin, Huang’s mother, Luo Caixiu, and Su’s maternal grandfather, Luo Bomu, both hail from the esteemed Luo family of Tainan.
Within that second generation, Luo Caixiu was the youngest of twelve siblings, while Luo Bomu was the eldest, separated by an 18-year age gap. Huang, six years Su’s senior, is technically her cousin (表舅) according to these familial ties.
Beyond family trivia, Su also addressed AMD’s positioning relative to industry giants Intel and Nvidia. Recalling her early days as CEO, she noted the constant comparisons to Intel. Her response to her team was a clear directive: “We know what we can do. Let’s show the world.”
She emphasized, “I don’t want to just be compared to Intel or Nvidia. My vision—our vision—has always been that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution.” This underscores AMD’s strategic focus on diverse solutions and market segments, a challenge to the conventional wisdom of head-to-head competition in the semiconductor space.
